No Impact Man The Adventures of a Guilty Liberal Who Tries to Save the Planet and the Discoveries He Makes About Himself and our Way of Life in the Process
Colin Beavan
A guilty liberal finally snaps, swears off plastic, goes organic, becomes a bicycle nut, turns off his power, and generally becomes a tree-hugging lunatic who tries to save the polar bears and the rest of the planet from environmental catastrophe while dragging his baby daughter and Prada-wearing, Four Seasons–loving wife along for the ride. And that’s just the beginning. Bill McKibben meets Bill Bryson in this seriously engaging look at one man’s decision to put his money where his mouth is and go off the grid for one year—while still living in New York City—to see if it’s possible to make no net impact on the environment. In other words, no trash, no toxins in the water, no elevators, no subway, no products in packaging, no air-conditioning, no television . . .

American Earth: Environmental Writing Since Thoreau.
Bill McKibben and Al Gore
In his introduction to this superb anthology, McKibben (The End of Nature) proposes that "environmental writing is America's most distinctive contribution to the world's literature.". McKibben's trenchant introductions to the pieces sum up each writer's thoughts and form a running commentary on the progress of the conservation movement. The book, can be read as a survey of the literature of American environmentalism, but above all, it should be enjoyed for the sheer beauty of the writing.
The Bridge at the Edge of the World: Capitalism, the Environment, and Crossing from Crisis to Sustainability.
Speth, J. G.
In this book James Gustave Speth, dean of the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies at Yale University, begins with the observation that the environmental community has grown in strength and sophistication, but the environment has continued to decline. A deeper critique is needed. Speth contends that this critique leads to a severe indictment of today's economic and political system - capitalism as it now actually operates. Our task is to change the operating instructions for the modern economy before it is too late.
