Sara Feigelson and Elyssa Swanson won cash prizes at the Hall of Fame
Essay Contest at the Warner Library, May 14, 2008.
On May 14,
at the Hall of Fame Awards Ceremony at the Library, Sarah Feigelson and
Elyssa Swanson added their winning essays on Miss Cassity Mason and Frank
Romer Pierson to the Hall of Fame. Cassity Mason, was the enterprising
founder of a progressive school for girls, known as the Castle School.
Frank R. Pierson, was a dedicated florist and horticulturalist who once
served as the Mayor of Tarrytown and the President of the School Board.
Pierson Avenue, Pierson School (now Landmark Condominiums) and Pierson
Park were all named in his honor. These two individuals will join past
Hall of Fame inductees, Washington Irving, John Worden, John D.
Rockefeller, Jr., Amanda Foster, and John C. Fremont.
Over the
last five years, school officials, relatives and friends of the students
participating in the contest have learned numerous otherwise unknown
facts and details about local personalities who were famous in the past.
The Historical Society, the Warner Library, the Hudson Valley Writers'
Cente, the Public Schools of the Tarrytowns and the Villages of Tarrytown
and Sleepy Hollow all sponsor the event.
