Along both sides of the Hudson River there is a stretch of scenic peaks that extends for twelve miles from Dunderberg Mountain (across from Peekskill) in the south to Storm King Mountain in the north. Today we call this region the Hudson Highlands, but in the nineteenth century they had a different formulation - the Highlands of the Hudson, the mountains of the river. Most people who viewed the Highlands did so from the steamboats and sailing vessels. These Highlands of the Hudson were a source of great inspiration for poets, painters, and other artists, such as Washington Irving and Thomas Cole,
