Telling Their Stories: A Presentation by the Historical Society

Telling Their Stories: Researching the History of Two Black Residents

Tuesday, January 19, 2020.  7-8:30pm on Zoom

History is a powerful force, shaping the way we see our community and define our culture. But as stories are told and re-told, sometimes the facts shift or the real story is directly silenced.

This talk will present new research on two black residents of the Sleepy Hollow/Tarrytown area whose stories have been attributed to others. We will share the history of Harry, a man enslaved by Frederick Philipse I, and Laura Taylor, the real force behind the donation of the land for Captors Monument in Patriots Park.

The talk will be presented by Sara Mascia, Executive Director, and Char Weigel, Trustee of The Historical Society Serving Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown.
